Possible uses of PVC-U

PVC-U pipes can be used wherever liquids need to be transported. They are used in the following areas, among others:

Drinking water suitability

Plasticizer-free hard PVC (PVC-U) is suitable for drinking water supply – cold water only – in principle. PVC-U has been used successfully in this area for over 60 years and is one of the oldest plastics in general. In terms of the mechanical characteristics and long-term behavior, the knowledge about PVC-U is presentable compared to "more modern" plastics. Rigid PVC (PVC-U, U=unplasticized) contains no plasticizers and is toxicologically and ecotoxicologically harmless. PVC is a material that, due to its high chlorine content, burns poorly by nature. According to DIN 4102, PVC-U products are classified as non-flammable.

UV resistance

Metal stabilizers (tin) are added to PVC-U pipes for UV stabilization. This also gives the PVC-U pipes their typical gray color. The stabilizers show a higher reactivity and thus disintegrate before the carbon compounds of the PVC.
UV rays promote this behavior. PVC-U pipes in outdoor areas should not be exposed to direct sunlight. UV radiation causes the PVC pipe to discolor. Over time (several years), the pipe material becomes brittle and the pressure resistance can decrease. This phenomenon is rarely encountered at our latitude. As a precaution, PVC-U pipes can be given a UV protective coating outdoors.

PVC-U plastic pipes are characterized by their high durability (up to 100 years), weather, chemical and corrosion resistance, as well as their enormous durability. In addition, their low weight makes them easier to transport and process than, for example, metal pipes.

PVC pressure pipes are durable and robust, the plastic does not decompose, i.e. there is no decay and microparticles. PVC-U pressure pipes can be glued to any PVC-U pipe. If your gutter downpipe is made of PVC-U or you would like to combine it with a KG pipe (orange wastewater pipe), this is possible. It is also possible to combine it with ABS plastic.

From aquarium piping, aquarium construction, pond construction, pool construction (ozone-resistant, salt water-resistant) to the industrial areas of swimming pool technology, sewage disposal, for biogas plants as well as the chemical process industry, the wide range of possible applications for pipes made of plasticizer-free hard PVC extends.
PVC-U pipes and PVC fittings are resistant to many acids and alkalis and can be used as cold water pipes for a liquid temperature range of 0°C to +45°C (up to +60°C for short periods). With increasing temperature, the pressure load is reduced, whereby from approx. +60°C the molecular structure changes, i.e. the pipe becomes soft. The melting point is approx. +80°C.
