PVC-U non-return valve, swing check valve, foot valve
Where to put the non-return valve?
The non-return valve is installed in the return line (suction side) between the skimmer and the sand filter system if the sand filter system is higher than the water surface, e.g. in a garden shed. In this way, the non-return valve prevents the suction line from running dry if the pump stops or fails.
Do not install a non-return valve directly behind the pump, as otherwise turbulence from the pump can lead to noise in the valve. Distance after pump at least 5x pipe cross-section. If possible, remove trapped air upstream of the non-return valve, as this can collect in the valve and also cause increased noise and turbulence in the volume flow.
Noise from the non-return valve
If the valve is not the correct size and the maximum flow capacity of the valve does not exactly match the flow rate of the system, chattering may occur.
Chattering can also occur if the valve is operated at an inlet pressure close to its opening pressure.
Do not install a non-return valve directly downstream of the pump, as otherwise turbulence from the pump can lead to noise in the valve. Distance after pump at least 5x pipe cross-section. If possible, remove trapped air upstream of the non-return valve, as this can collect in the valve and cause increased noise and turbulence in the volume flow.
Unfortunately, most pump shafts, professional or self-built, are not very suitable for silent operation, as there is little space and a bracket usually has to be installed quickly before the non-return valve is installed. The resulting turbulence can lead to noise development due to the disturbed volume flow.
